Book Me for Your Personal Statement Review
1 Round of Comprehensive Written Feedback + Loom Feedback Video + Optional 30-Minute Zoom

WHAT IS A PERSONAL STATEMENT REVIEW?

This review is for students who have written their 650-word personal statement (also known
as the main admission essay or Common App essay) or their UC PIQs — plus their Activities List, and the Additional Information and the Challenges and Opportunities sections — and who want an expert perspective and the constructive, actionable feedback they need to help them improve their essay and give them the confidence to click Submit.

This isn't a service for testing out topics or seeing if students are on the right track with an essay. This is for an essay they've drafted and redrafted and are JUST ABOUT ready to submit.

My goal is to give students comprehensive, detailed feedback so they're confident in continuing to edit it on their own and that they feel good about submitting it to colleges.
About Julia Byrd: Essay Coach

As an essay coach, I work with college applicants to help them recognize their accomplishments and draw unique connections between their life experiences, their values, and their college and career goals. I offer a customized approach to brainstorming, writing, and editing admission essays, and my accessibility and relatability to students are the cornerstone of my approach. I’m proud to ease the stress between students and parents while increasing students’ writing confidence.

I'm proud to collaborate with organizations like College Essay Guy and Texas A&M to help students achieve their college admission goals.

I'm a member of the Texas Association for College Admission Counseling, and my past students have received acceptances from a number of great colleges, a few of which include Columbia, NYU, USC, UT-Austin, University of Miami, Yale, UIUC, Boston College, Colorado School of Mines, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Pepperdine, Rice, Dartmouth, Lehigh, Texas A&M, Wellesley, and Washington University.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE REVIEW?

I'll do a one-time evaluation of the student's already-written essay(s), Activities List, and Additional Information and Challenges & Opportunities sections for insight, values, style, and more to ensure the final drafts hit the mark.

First, I'll provide detailed written feedback via Google Docs and Loom video feedback. Then, we'll meet with students via Zoom for a 30-minute session (optional) to review feedback, ask and answer questions, and discuss next steps. Here are just a few of the things I'm looking for when I review and evaluate an already-written personal statement:

Does the essay tell a story/show something about the student that won't be found anywhere else in their application?

Does it communicate the values, skills, and experiences that would make a school proud to have the student wearing the school's sweatshirt and being on campus?

Does it show some vulnerability as well as some insight by (and growth of) the student?

Is it written well and in the voice of a high school senior?

Note: The base $400 review is for the main 650-word admission essay only (or the UC PIQs), the Activities List, the Additional Information and Challenges & Circumstances sections, and a set of supplementals from one school. Reviews of additional essays or other application materials are available at an additional cost (see below).

Please allow up to 3 business days to return the review with feedback. (Timing may vary depending on volume and proximity to deadlines.

Your Questions, Answered.

  • What's included in the review?
    I spend between 60-90 minutes (for the base review) giving detailed inline feedback on the essays themselves. Feedback covers content, voice, insight, structure, tone, clarity, and whether the essay actually answers the prompt — not just grammar (although yes, I'll clean that up, too).

    I also provide a 10- to 20-minute Loom video walking through the feedback.

    Finally, I offer a 30-minute follow-up Zoom call with students to answer any questions they have or to review edits they may have made.
  • Remind me what materials will be reviewed.
    In the base package, you’ll receive review and feedback on:

    * One 650-word personal statement or the four UC PIQs
    * The Activities List
    * The Additional Information and Challenges & Circumstances section
    * A set of supplemental essays from one college

    Additional schools can be added at the listed package rates.
  • What if my student doesn’t want the Zoom call?
    No problem at all.

    The Zoom call is optional. Some students love talking things through; others feel confident about revising independently. Both approaches work. The written and video feedback alone are more than enough to guide strong revisions.
  • How fast will we get feedback back?
    Within three business days of receiving all materials, subject to my availability and proximity to deadlines.

    During peak season, it may be closer to the full three days; during quieter periods, it’s often sooner. If you’re working right up against a deadline, reach out — I’ll let you know if a rush review is possible.
  • Can you guarantee admission to my student's top-choice school?
    No. There are many factors in admissions beyond the essay, such as institutional priorities, major, GPA, testing, class size, and budget. What I can promise is this review will result in:

    * A stronger, clearer, more authentic essay
    * Reduced stress and greater confidence in submitting
    * Professional-level feedback grounded in years of experience

    I help students submit work they feel proud of — and that's the part they can control.
  • Will you catch grammar and spelling mistakes?
    Absolutely. I’ll help with making recommendations for:

    * Correcting grammar/punctuation errors
    * Improving flow and clarity
    * Upleveling word choice, while making sure the teenage voice is still strong
    * Avoiding essay clichés
    * Eliminating repetition across application sections

    Students get both micro-level editing notes and big-picture narrative guidance.
  • Are you familiar with what colleges are currently looking for in essays?
    Very much so.

    My experience includes years of essay coaching, ongoing professional training, collaboration with the College Essay Guy team, and an understanding of current (but always-changing) admissions trends.

    I read (and give feedback on) hundreds of essays each year. And here's the good news: As someone who doesn't know your student but who wants to get to know them through their essays, I have a unique and unbiased perspective and can evaluate essays through the lens of what actual admissions readers are looking for.
  • What if my student hasn’t written anything yet or we're just in the early stages of drafting?
    This package isn’t the best fit. This is for a drafted (and redrafted) final essay that is just about ready to submit. If you're still in the early stages, you’ll want a coaching package that includes topic selection and drafting support.

    This option is designed for: “We're ready to submit. But first, we need expert eyes.”
